He lives and works in Oise, a department in northern France. He has used photographic techniques in his work since the end of the 1980s, and in recent years he has created approximately twenty films, which he sees as part of an ongoing \u2018dialogue\u2019 with his artworks.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 1961 \u2014<br \/>In October, Rouan arrives in Paris to study at the \u2018\u00c9cole des Beaux Arts\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 1965 \u2014<br \/>Experiments with a range of different procedures on a small scale, and on paper: incision, covering, intermeshing, braiding\/plaiting.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 1966 \u2014<br \/>Experiments for the first time with \u2018tressages\u2019 (braidings\/plaitings) on canvas.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 1968 \u2014<br \/>Creates a series of black and white canvas \u2018tressages\u2019, a project motivated by what Rouan describes as a <em>minimalist temptation<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 1971 \u2014<br \/>In June, meets Lucien Durand. Durand exhibits three \u2018tressages\u2019\u00a0in his gallery and, in September, organises the first solo exhibition of Rouan\u2019s work.<br \/>Rouan secures funding to reside and work at the Villa Medici, which houses the French Academy in Rome (and is directed by Balthus); he arrives in September.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 1972 \u2014<br \/>Starts work on a series entitled <em>Portes<\/em>.<br \/>Meets Brigitte Courme.<br \/>Begins to develop a profound friendship with Balthus; receives frequent visits from Jacques Lacan, who buys some of his drawings, and Pierre Matisse, who becomes his art dealer, and exhibits Rouan\u2019s work in his New York gallery (from 1972-1988).<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 1973 \u2014<br \/>Visits Siena, in Italy, and at the \u2018Palazzo Communale\u2019, begins work inspired by Ambrogia Lorenzetti\u2019s frescoes (in particular the dancing nymphs depicted in the <em>Allegory of Good Government<\/em>).<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 1975 \u2014<br \/>Rouan\u2019s exhibition <em>Douze Portes<\/em> opens in Paris at the \u2018Mus\u00e9e National d\u2019Art Moderne\u2019.<br \/>He starts work on three new series: <em>Jardins<\/em>, <em>Saisons<\/em>, <em>Cassone<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 1976 \u2014<br \/>Rouan completes the last of the <em>Portes<\/em>\u00a0series.<br \/>Work continues on three series: <em>Jardins<\/em>\u00a0(until 1980), <em>Saisons<\/em>, (until 1982), and <em>Cassone<\/em> (until 1983)<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 1978 \u2014<br \/>Leaves Italy and moves to Laversine, in Oise, northern France.<br \/>A major exhibition of Rouan\u2019s work is held at the \u2018Mus\u00e9e Cantini\u2019 in Marseille. The catalogue includes a text (accompanied by sketches of <em>Borromean rings<\/em>) by Jacques Lacan<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 1979 \u2014<br \/>Begins work on two new series, <em>Frontone<\/em>\u00a0and <em>Bosco<\/em>.<br \/>A solo exhibition of Rouan\u2019s work is held at the \u2018St\u00e4dtische Kunsthalle\u2019 in D\u00fcsseldorf.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 1982 \u2014<br \/>The series <em>Selon ses faces<\/em>\u00a0and the works <em>Innocent Soir<\/em>\u00a0and <em>Cassone VII<\/em> are completed. They are tributes to his departed and beloved Brigitte.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 1983 \u2014<br \/>A retrospective exhibition of Rouan\u2019s work is held at the \u2018Mus\u00e9e National d\u2019Art Moderne\u2019 in Paris.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 1984 \u2014<br \/>Rouan begins work on a new series (drawings of nudes) entitled\u00a0<em>Figures\/Trembles<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 1985 \u2014<br \/>Rouan begins work on <em>Son Pied\/la Route<\/em>\u00a0(the project remains ongoing until 1988).<br \/>A text by Jean-Pierre Vernant, <em>La mort dans les yeux<\/em>\u00a0(published by Flammarion in 1985), a reflection upon the gaze of the Gorgon, is a source of inspiration for Rouan\u2019s new series, <em>les Babas<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 1986 \u2014<br \/>Starts work on a new series, <em>Bustes<\/em>. These are smaller-scale pieces, related to some of Dubuffet\u2019s works.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 1987 \u2014<br \/>Rouan\u2019s first explorations into the use of photography, after models.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 1988 \u2014<br \/>Rouan begins a period of reflection upon the use of prints, with a series entitled <em>St\u00fccke<\/em>, using prints and photographic images of models.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 1989 \u2014<br \/>Rouan creates sketches of stained glass (using paper cut-outs) for the lower chapels of Nevers Cathedral. He works on the new series <em>Cavalcadour<\/em>, <em>Constellations<\/em>, <em>Oiseaux-cr\u00e2ne<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 1991 \u2014<br \/><em>Constellations tabou\u00e9es<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 1992 \u2014<br \/><em>Jardins tabou\u00e9s<\/em>, and the first <em>Coquilles<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 1993 \u2014<br \/>In September, Rouan\u2019s visit to the Mir\u00f3 exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York inspires a new series entitled\u00a0<em>Mirotopos<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 1994 \u2014<br \/>Exhibition at the \u2018Centre Pompidou\u2019 (\u2018Cabinet d\u2019art Graphique\u2019) in Paris, entitled <em>Fran\u00e7ois Rouan, Travaux sur Papiers 1965-1992<\/em>.<br \/>Creates the stained-glass windows at the Saint-Jean-Baptiste church in Castelnau-le-Lez in H\u00e9rault.<br \/>A major exhibition of Rouan\u2019s work is held at the St\u00e4dtische Kunsthalle in D\u00fcsseldorf, and repeated the following year at the \u2018Mus\u00e9e d\u2019art moderne\u2019 in Villeneuve d\u2019Ascq.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 1995 \u2014<br \/>Works on a new project at Villeneuve d\u2019Ascq, after Picasso\u2019s <em>Homme Nu<\/em>, part of the collection owned by the town\u2019s \u2018Mus\u00e9e d\u2019art moderne\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 1996 \u2014<br \/>Begins a new series: <em>Queequeg<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 1997 \u2014<br \/>A retrospective exhibition is held at the Sezon Museum of Art, in Tokyo.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 1998 \u2014<br \/>The exhibition <em>Bonnefoi Pincemin Rouan<\/em>\u00a0is held at the \u2018galerie Jacques Elbaz\u2019, in Paris.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 2000 \u2014<br \/>Several solo exhibitions: at the \u2018Sables d\u2019Olonne\u2019 (\u2018Mus\u00e9e de l\u2019Abbaye Sainte-Croix\u2019), in Beijing (\u2018Institut des Beaux-Arts\u2019) and at the FIAC (\u2018Grand Palais, Galerie Daniel Templon\u2019).<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 2002 \u2014<br \/>Work continues on the series <em>Queequeg<\/em>\u00a0and <em>Onoma<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 2003 \u2014<br \/>The use of photographic prints, an increasingly important technique in Rouan\u2019s work, is the subject of an exhibition (entitled <em>Ash Babies<\/em>) held in January at the \u2018galerie Daniel Templon\u2019.<br \/>On Phillipe Dagen\u2019s invitation to the group exhibition <em>De M\u00e9moires<\/em>, held at \u2018Le Fresnoy &#8211; Studio national des Arts Contemporains\u2019 (directed by Alain Fleischer), Rouan makes his first film, <em><a href=\"http:\/\/francoisrouan.net\/?p=229&amp;lang=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Clamouse<\/a><\/em>, based upon his photographic work. As part of the exhibition, the film is projected close to Rouan\u2019s own sketches (a series entitled <em>Roses turques<\/em>).<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 2004 \u2014<br \/>Two new series explore the theme of the landscape: <em>Les Mappes<\/em>\u00a0and <em>les Engiadina<\/em>.<br \/>In autumn, Rouan exhibits several pieces at the <em>Primatrice, ma\u00eetre de Fontainebleau<\/em> exhibition at the \u2018Mus\u00e9e du Louvre\u2019: he presents encaustic paintings, panels of photographs, and a film entitled <em><a href=\"http:\/\/francoisrouan.net\/?p=233&amp;lang=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Di sotto in su<\/a><\/em>: these are juxtaposed with works by Primatrice.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 2005 \u2014<br \/>Completes several films: <em><a href=\"http:\/\/francoisrouan.net\/?p=237&amp;lang=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Le petit objet<\/a><\/em>, <em><a href=\"http:\/\/francoisrouan.net\/?p=246&amp;lang=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Chiquenaude dans l\u2019ab\u00eeme<\/a><\/em>, and <em><a href=\"http:\/\/francoisrouan.net\/?p=242&amp;lang=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Pierre \u00e0 Laversine<\/a><\/em>; the last of these is a contribution to a dialogue with Pierre Guyotat, begun in 2002.<br \/>During the academic year 2005-6, Rouan is the invited artist at\u00a0\u2018Le Fresnoy &#8211; Studio national des Arts Contemporains\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 2006 \u2014<br \/>A retrospective exhibition is held at the \u2018Mus\u00e9e des Abattoirs\u2019 in Toulouse, entitled <em>Fran\u00e7ois Rouan, Contre Image<\/em>.<br \/>Rouan creates two new films: <em>Sans le Savoir<\/em>\u00a0and <em><a href=\"http:\/\/francoisrouan.net\/?p=258&amp;lang=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Wunderblock<\/a><\/em>.<br \/>At \u2018Les Gobelins\u2019, Rouan works on the photographic aspects of the large <em>Tentures du Roi<\/em>, towards the eventual creation of a decorative \u2018video ceiling\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 2007 \u2014<br \/>Begins work on a new series of drawings and paintings, entitled <em>Culebras<\/em>.<br \/>Creates a new film, <em>L\u2019envers du d\u00e9cor<\/em>, based on the work of the tapestry weavers at \u2018Les Gobelins\u2019; at the same time, Rouan finalises the sequences for display on the video ceiling; creates another film, entitled <em><a href=\"http:\/\/francoisrouan.net\/?p=262&amp;lang=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Le Torrent<\/a><\/em>.<br \/>Autumn: presents fifteen new \u2018tressages\u2019\u00a0\u2014 including the first <em>Culebras<\/em>\u00a0\u2014 at the \u2018Espace Tajan\u2019, in Paris: these are presented in the context of a <em>studio visit<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 2008 \u2014<br \/>At the start of the year, creates a new film, <em><a href=\"http:\/\/francoisrouan.net\/?p=270&amp;lang=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sable Mouvant<\/a><\/em>, for a conference devoted to Pierre Reverdy, a poet much-admired by Rouan.<br \/>In the summer, at the Courbet exhibition held at the \u2018Mus\u00e9e Fabre\u2019 in Montpellier, Rouan presents a video installation, <em>Le cat\u00e9chisme de Gustave<\/em>.<br \/>In October, a major monograph, in two volumes, is published by \u2018Les \u00c9ditions Galil\u00e9e\u2019: <em>Rouan le peintre<\/em>, by Dominique Cordellier and <em>Tombeau de Francesco Primaticcio<\/em>, by Fran\u00e7ois Rouan.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 2009 \u2014<br \/>Rouan\u2019s second <em>studio visit<\/em>\u00a0at the \u2018Espace Tajan\u2019 includes 11 recent works, as well as the film <em>Les roses de Laversine<\/em>.<br \/>A second monographic exhibition, <em>Sempervirens<\/em>, is held at the galerie \u2018Jean Fournier\u2019 in Paris, and includes a new film, <em><a href=\"http:\/\/francoisrouan.net\/?p=274&amp;lang=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">15 \u00d7 32<\/a><\/em>.<br \/>Rouan\u2019s work is displayed as part of the collective exhibition <em>Ils ont regard\u00e9 Matisse<\/em>, held at the \u2018Mus\u00e9e Matisse\u2019 in Cateau-Cambr\u00e9sis.<br \/>Completes two new series: <em>Membrillo<\/em>\u00a0and <em>Fleurs de coing<\/em>; begins work on what will become the series entitled <em>Odalisque Flandres<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 2010 \u2014<br \/>The long-lasting friendship between Fran\u00e7ois Rouan and the poet Bernard No\u00ebl gives rise to a joint project: a text (with photographs by Rouan) based on No\u00ebl\u2019s poem, <em><a href=\"http:\/\/francoisrouan.net\/?p=170&amp;lang=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ce jardin d\u2019encre \/ Este jardin de tinta<\/a><\/em>. A complete version of the film <em>L\u2019Amiti\u00e9<\/em> is presented.<br \/>The exhibition <em>Fran\u00e7ois Rouan, <a href=\"http:\/\/francoisrouan.net\/?p=100&amp;lang=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">La d\u00e9coupe comme mod\u00e8le<\/a><\/em>\u00a0is held at the \u2018Mus\u00e9e Matisse\u2019, in Le Cateau-Cambr\u00e9sis; approximately 60 of Rouan\u2019s works (paper cut-outs and \u2018tressages\u2019 created between 1965-1970) and the series <em>Odalisque Flandres<\/em>, are exhibited for the first time; the films <em>L\u2019Amiti\u00e9<\/em> and <em>Odalisque Flandres<\/em> are presented; a solo exhibition, <em>D\u00e9coupe\/Mod\u00e8le 1965-2009<\/em>\u00a0is held in Paris at the \u2018galerie Jean Fournier\u2019. Rouan presents a Savonnerie carpet and his large (ceiling) video installation.<br \/><span style=\"line-height: 1.6471;\">Rouan publishes a collection of his written work (penned over the period 1971-2010) with \u00e9ditions Galil\u00e9e, entitled <em>Notes de regard<\/em>.<br \/><\/span><span style=\"line-height: 1.6471;\">In the spring, Rouan designs items of jewellery using gold thread: these are exhibited in B\u00e2le, as part of the \u2018Foire internationale d\u2019art\u2019 (International Art Forum).<br \/><\/span><span style=\"line-height: 1.6471;\">The death of a friend, Jean-Claude Deshons, inspires work on a text, to be entitled <em>Trotteuses<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 2012 \u2014<br \/>Bernard No\u00ebl continues to work on <em><a href=\"http:\/\/francoisrouan.net\/?p=170&amp;lang=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ce jardin d\u2019encre<\/a><\/em>\u00a0which becomes <em><a href=\"http:\/\/francoisrouan.net\/?p=182&amp;lang=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Le chemin d\u2019encre \/ \u0637\u0631\u064a\u0642\u064f \u0627\u0644\u0645\u062f\u064e\u0627\u062f<\/a><\/em>. Under this latter title, a second volume is published with Cadastre8zero: this volume is the object of a new exhibition held at the \u2018Maison des Arts et Loisirs\u2019 in Laon. The film <em><a href=\"http:\/\/francoisrouan.net\/?p=287&amp;lang=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bernard No\u00ebl \u00e0 Laversine<\/a><\/em>\u00a0is completed and projected at this exhibition.<br \/>A new piece of jewellery completes the series begun in 2011. The series is presented in the film entitled\u00a0<em>Des bijoux discrets<\/em>.<br \/>Work begins on a new series, <em>Chambres<\/em>, destined for the Ch\u00e2teau de Hautefort in Dordogne.<br \/>Writing for <em>Trotteuses<\/em> continues.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 2013 \u2014<br \/>The first instalment of the exhibition <em>Fran\u00e7ois Rouan \u00e0 Hautefort<\/em>\u00a0is held, in Dordogne. This first phase presents \u2018tressages\u2019\u00a0from the <em>Chambre<\/em>\u00a0series, and the piece entitled <em>Chambre de Primaticcio<\/em>; these are accompanied by two photographic predellas, a film entitled <em><a href=\"http:\/\/francoisrouan.net\/?p=291&amp;lang=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">D\u2019ici et de dessous<\/a><\/em>, the pieces of jewellery and the <a href=\"http:\/\/francoisrouan.net\/?p=282&amp;lang=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">film<\/a> in which these are presented, and an installation comprising photographic, video et audio works, entitled <em>Chambre des Ombres<\/em>.<br \/>Work on the text of <em>Trotteuses<\/em> continues, at the same time as work on a series of eponymous tressages.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 2014 \u2014<br \/>An exhibition is held at the \u2018Maison de la Culture\u2019 in Amiens. Work on the project <em><a href=\"http:\/\/francoisrouan.net\/?p=182&amp;lang=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Le chemin d\u2019encre<\/a><\/em> (ongoing with Bernard No\u00ebl) accompanies the exhibition, which comprises the <em>Trotteuses<\/em> series, a <a href=\"http:\/\/francoisrouan.net\/?p=295&amp;lang=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">film<\/a> of the same name, and a new series combining photographic work with encaustic painting techniques entitled <em>Diaphanes<\/em>. For this occasion, the book <em><a href=\"http:\/\/francoisrouan.net\/?p=186&amp;lang=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Trotteuses<\/a><\/em> is published.<br \/>Second part of <em>Fran\u00e7ois Rouan \u00e0 Hautefort<\/em>.
